On October 8th, the staff of LSNV met for an all-day retreat. The staff had a presentation from Detective Jacquelynn Smith of the Fairfax County Police Department who is a member of Fairfax County’s Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team. Detective Smith discussed lethality assessment protocols. Being able to accurately assess if a person in a domestic violence situation is in danger of being killed has saved many lives. We at LSNV are in a position to help people get to safety. The staff also learned how to identify and cope with burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. Those of us who help others also have to learn to help ourselves.
